SCENE 27_

INT. HOTEL ROOM - NIGHT

I expect Reid to scold me when he returns to our room.

I abandoned him at the party, after all. I directly disobeyed Hugh’s orders and left without so much as a goodbye. I almost immediately regretted it. I nearly turned right back around and apologized for my lack of professionalism. But something Reid told me earlier stopped me. We’re fake dating; we’re way past the point of professionalism.

Though that hasn’t stopped me from worrying about his reaction. I’ve probably burned a hole in the hotel carpet from all my pacing. I practically jump when a beep outside the door announces Reid’s return. I hold my breath as he stalks inside, waiting for him to rebuke me for my bad behavior.

But he doesn’t even glance my way. My boss shrugs off his jacket, tossing it over one of the desk chairs. He steps into the bathroom, and from my spot on the bed, I watch his reflection in the mirror. He splashes water on his face before slicking his hair back. And then, at last, he meets my gaze.

Again, I wait for him to voice his disapproval. I even close my eyes, hoping not having to see his angry face will numb the sting of embarrassment. His heavy footsteps cross the room before I feel him pause by the side of the bed.

“Did you mean what you said?”

I sneak a peek at him. He doesn’t look mad. Tired, maybe. His eyes are slightly glazed in a way that says he’s had a few drinks. “When I said…what?”

“When you said only those less famous than me would benefit from leaking my secrets.”

My brows pinch together as I try to guess where he’s going with this. “Yes. I mean, I can’t imagine an A-lister would jump at the chance to be associated with you.” I wince. “No offense.”

Reid nods once. Swipes his tongue across his lower lip. Then spins around. It’s only after he’s halfway out of the door that I manage to speak up.

“Wait! Where are you going?”

For a moment, I don’t think he’ll turn back. But he glances over his shoulder, a strange look on his face. “To find somewhere to sleep.”

A beat passes before I make sense of his words. “You’re going to buy another room?”

Reid clears his throat, turning back around so he doesn’t have to face me when he says, “Maybe. Not sure yet.”

It hits me. I jolt upright. “You’re going to sleep somewhere else?” I hiss. “Reid, that’s a legitimately terrible idea!”

He sighs before pulling himself out of the hallway and back into our room. He stands facing the door, unwilling or unable to look at me. “Look, Elodie. It seems like we’re stuck here for the night. This room only has one bed. I’d sleep on the couch if we had one.”

I glance behind me at the two chaises sitting opposite a coffee table. He’s right; our room didn’t come with an extra bed or even a human-sized sofa. We’d have to share the same mattress.
